PORTULACA also known as SUN JEWELS

Portulacas or Sun Jewels are really easy to grow. They love lots of sun and thrive in warmer months. The stems are brittle but regrowth is easy. To multiply portulacas, simply break off a stem (no root is needed) and plant it into the soil. It will grow new stems in about a week. It will just grow and grow (in warmer months only) and very soon there will be so much that you probably won't know what to do with them.

The stems are long and because it is brittle, even the "leaves" fall off when it rains hard, leaving just the stems intact.

The flowers are vibrant in colors particularly the luminous magenta ones as seen in the photos above and below. Unfortunately they do not flower during cold season and look unattractive during that time.

Even when you actually got rid of the portulacas around your garden, don't be surprised to see some seedlings sprout here and there.
